FORGOTTEN FOR ALMOST 60 YEARS APOLLO SIGNS wants to honor our military troops with a modern day come back of the BLUE STAR FLAG. In the form of a yard sign by giving them away to the the immediate family members of our U.S. military. The "In Service Flag", also known as the BLUE STAR FLAG, dates back to both World Wars. A white flag with a red border and a blue star in the center was designed and patented in 1917, by World War II U.S. Army CAPT. ROBERT L. QUEISSNER of the 5th Ohio Infantry who had two sons on the front lines. The flag became the unofficial symbol of a family with a child in the service. During World War II the practice of displaying the flag became more wide spread, but its use has nearly vanished in recent years. In 1918 President Woodrow Wilson approved a suggestion by the Women's Committee of the Council of National Defense that mothers who had lost a child serving in the war could wear a gold star to indicate that the service member had died or been killed. The blue star represents hope and pride. The gold star represents sacrifice to the cause of liberty and freedom. The number of star on the flag represents the number of family members serving in the military. The Department of Defense has specified that family members are authorized to honor their military family by flying the BLUE STAR FLAG during any period of war or hostilities. Authorized family includes: husband, wife, mother, grandparents, step-parents, children, brothers, and sisters of a member of the armed forces.
